吴二年（1368）正月，朱元璋称帝，建立明朝，改元洪武。同年三月，明太祖朱元璋于命京城（南京）工部宝源局及各省宝泉局铸行“洪武通宝”，由工部主管铸钱，下设宝源局。朱元璋为避讳元朝的元字，把所铸之钱钱文一律叫通宝而不叫元宝，而不只是为避讳他自己的名字，以后所铸之钱也都没有元宝钱文。
In the first month of the second year of Wu Dynasty (1368), Zhu Yuanzhang was called emperor. He established the Ming Dynasty and changed it to Hongwu. In order to avoid the Yuan characters of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang called all the coins and articles Tongbao instead of Yuanbao, not only to avoid his own name, but also no Yuanbao Qianwen in the future.
洪武通宝钱制沿续元末朱元璋所铸“大中通宝”的形制，分为五等，规定小平钱，每文重一钱，折二钱重二钱，当三钱重三钱，当五钱重五钱，当十钱重一两。洪武通宝应运而生，是该历史时期钱币改革的产物，有着浓厚的历史熏陶。
