光绪二十九年（公元1903年）七月，清政府拟订了《整顿圜法章程》十条，其中提出银币专由造币总厂制造，保留南洋（江南）、北洋、广东、湖北四局为分厂。一些机制的大清银币虽然退出了流通市场，但在其收藏市场价格一直成上涨趋势。一些稀少的大清银币更是可遇而不求。
1911-1912年初辛亥革命胜利后，清帝退位，中华民国成立，当时继续铸造新币以稳定当时社会的经济。于是便开铸了中华民国开国纪念币、孙中山钱币等，而中华民国时期钱币分三个时期，分别是初期、中期和后期。
民国后期银元主要指民国二十五年（1936）至民国三十八年（1949）。民国中期后几年，各地军阀逐步走向衰落，国民党政府开始了统一币制控制金融的进程。这一时期国民党政府主要发行纸币，银元辅币逐渐被镍币所代替。发行的银元主要有党徽布图分币等。解放前夕，贵州、绥远还发行了地方银元，但只是昙花一现。至此，银元走完了其短暂的历程，逐渐退出流通领域。
从以往各地的钱币市场成交记录来看，清代机制银元及民国银元市场行情一片叫好，且随着时间的推移，其“身价”变得越来越珍贵。因其系贵金属所铸，制作数量比铜元、纸币少得多，加上清末民国时期社会动荡，存世所剩很少，比现发行的邮票、纪念币数量少得多。可以预见，清末明初机制银元必将成为收藏界的一匹蓄势待发的黑马。种种迹象表明，投资艺术品是有智慧头脑的选择，因而也适合民间藏友们进行珍藏！
