在中国近代史的发展历程中，出现了许多历史性的英雄人物。其中，于19世纪早期推翻满清封建君主专制统治、结束长达两千多年封建帝制的孙中山先生，成为近代社会发展过程中一位具有举足轻重地位的历史人物。孙中山先生不仅在政治上为中国做出了极大的贡献，而且在经济上也为中国的发展描绘了宏伟的蓝图，是近代历史上民主革命思想的先行者。
1912年是中华民国成立的开始，举国上下民主人士齐心和合作。袁世凯表面支持共和，实则觊觎民主胜利果实。1912年元月，各方民主力量经过几十年的斗争后，终于战胜了封建清政府，在列强压迫，内战不断的环境下，和平易帜，交接政权。
为了纪念这件翻天覆地的大事，国民政府决定铸银元纪念。1912年的民元国会。选举孙中山为第一领导人。铸造的首批银元以孙中山头像为背景图案。首铸币背面六角星，镂空麦穗围绕。这批银元为首铸的一批，发行有限，仅有40000枚，当年即被换购收藏一空。

此币正面中央为孙中山侧面像，上方书“中华民国”四字，下铸有“中华民国开国纪念币”隶书字样，左上、右上位置各有一个五花星，周边有珠点、齿状装饰。背面中央为隶书“壹圆”二字，左右各辅以嘉禾图案，上侧有“MEMENTO”(纪念币)字样，下侧为“BIRTH OFREPUBLIC OF CHINA”(中华民国诞生)，左右上方分列六角星图案。此币记录了辛亥革命惊天动地的伟大历史，由于历经百年风雨，加上当时铸造数量极为有限，存世量极为稀少，尤其是品相好的更为稀缺，极具收藏价值。
