花钱是民间对所有不作货币流通钱的统称(俗成压胜钱或厌胜钱),在我国有着非常悠久的历史,历朝历代的官民们都期盼着一年四季风调雨顺、平平安安、吉祥如意。因而在民间,形成了官铸或者民铸各式各样的花钱,生肖钱、咒语钱、吉语钱等等。吉祥如意的花钱品种很多,大多具有祝福的含义,因此赠送花钱是有考究的。什么用途赠送什么图文的花钱,会具有不同的深远意义。

花钱源于汉代,花钱在早期使用的时候主要是中国民间自娱自乐的一种玩钱,这种钱币由于不是流通钱,因此它的材质大都比较粗糙,中国民间把这种钱俗称为“花钱”。其虽然具有钱币的形态,但不作流通使用,是钱币中的“非正用品”。

清代每逢新君登基更改年号,各钱局将要开炉鼓铸新年号钱时,为郑重其事,先以上等铜料精铸一批带有纪念性质的大钱,这些钱即所谓的“开炉钱”。
